You can feel the momentum building

With the full schedule released tonight, is there anything the NFL can do that will shock you?

Count to 16 regular season games.

It will be fun to see Mike McCarthy’s reaction when the boys come to town!

I expect a positive reaction. It is definitely worth it. Mike has achieved a lot of great things in Green Bay and built a football team that Packers fans can be proud of. He ran his program with integrity. It would be great to see him again at Lambeau Field and get the respect he so deeply deserves.

The narrative surrounding Dallas Green Bay will focus on McCarthy’s return to Lambeau. This is well and worthy, however, the narrative is much larger – it’s about a historical rivalry and many great moments over the years. The Ice Bowl, Dez, “no catch” (it sure wasn’t a catch, btw), and my favorite, the phrase “We painted the play in the dirt” from AR12 to Jared Cook set the boundaries for Mason Crosby to walk. Epic stuff… epic…

That playoff in Dallas is still my all-time favorite. Green Bay and McCarthy will grab most of the headlines that week, but the truth is this is a game between two perennial contenders with Super Bowl aspirations. If both teams remain in good health, this is a match that could greatly affect the playoff equation. This is the real story.

I recently read Devonte Wyatt/Warren Sapp comp (Pills of Salt) and it got me thinking about a swipe. Do you think there is a possibility that this year’s assists will speed up to surpass the best units D has had in the last 30 years (maybe I would put Clay/Colin and Reggie/Price on top during that time)? I’m expecting a third touchdown as Wyatt and Kenny Clark line up on intervention, while Preston Smith and Rachan Gary fly off the ledge and De’Vondre Campbell and Quay Walker jump around LOS before the snap, disguising their intentions. Beware, beware!

The potential is definitely there. This is the Packers’ deepest defensive line on paper since I started covering the team. But you can’t combine Super Bowl episodes of potential. You have to earn it. But I love the individual possibilities the depth creates. We haven’t spoken to Joe Barry yet but I’m sure he’s very happy. This toolbox contains everything a defensive coordinator could want.

I love hearing comments about Christian Watson from NDSU. An interesting fact showing positive evidence that NFL scouts are everywhere looking for prospects starting with five players being drafted from the same conference including NDSU (2), South Dakota State U (2) and U of North Dakota (1) . The most interesting part is the same number of players drafted from Power 5 schools in Florida (1), Florida (3) and Miami (1).

It’s a new dawn in college football. The FCS majors do a great job of identifying and developing under-the-radar talent to legitimate prospects in the NFL. I think we’re only at the beginning of that wave, too. You can feel the momentum building.

Looking at the upcoming 2022-23 NFL season, is it possible that Christian Watson can pull off Ja’Marr Chase and get a break in his first year at the Packers, or does he need time to develop and understand our offensive tactics we’re put in place before he becomes a full-time player? ?

There’s no doubt that these college recipients are often way ahead of their predecessors when it comes to making an immediate impact in the NFL, but Chase and Justin Jefferson are generational talents. It’s hard to keep any incoming novice at this level. Beams was coined by Christian Watson for a reason. He just needs to be himself, learn the rules of the game and be ready when his number is called.
